ICES Annual Science Conference 2025

Theme session L

Sustainable aquaculture impact indicators

Aquaculture is a growing industry in many ICES countries. Sustainable aquaculture is the practice of producing safe aquatic food and associated products in a manner that is environmentally and socially responsible, as well as economically viable. This implies using production systems and technologies that minimize negative impacts on the environment, livelihoods, and communities.

Sustainable growth will depend on how the industry and regulators manage disease, environmental problems, climate-change realities, and competition with other sectors for ocean space. On a global scale, there is increasing focus on potential aquaculture impacts and how to select the best indicators to inform on the different pathways of effects, as well as how to monitor them.

This session is focused on science presentations and posters on thoughts and suggestions regarding potential aquaculture impact indicators and their monitoring. Presentations on how to characterize environmental risk in relation to the different pathways of effects of aquaculture are encouraged.
