Data calls

ICES relies on the provision of data to its working groups to further scientific understanding of ecosystem processes that can also lead to management advice.

Data are provided to ICES under general provisions of the ICES data policy. All data are publicly available under the creative commons license (CC BY 4.0) that ICES has adopted for all publications, data products, advice outputs, and open access public data. ICES data policy states the general principles for the ICES data life cycle to facilitate the production of science-based advice and status reports and serve the scientific community.

Exclusions to unrestricted public access:

  • Commercial catch data from the Regional Database and Estimation System (RDBES), Regional Fisheries Database (RDB-FishFrame) and InterCatch, which have independent data licensing.
  • VMS and Logbook data, which are governed by the conditions under the specific data call.
  • Biodiversity data (birds, seals and cetaceans) where data may have been provided by non-governmental organisations.
  • Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VME) data portal, where location information is sensitive.

An up-to-date list of open Data calls is available under Submission of Data
