ICES ANNUAL SCIENCE CONFERENCE 2016

Open session: How to get your message through

Making your science matter – science communication tips to boost your impact

15:00–16:30
Wednesday 21 September
Room: Beta 2

Chairs: Line Reeh (DTU Aqua) Kari Østervold Toft (IMR), Carl O’Brien (CEFAS) and Terhi Minkkinen (ICES)

Invited speaker: Peter Hyldgaard, journalist, editor and biologist, Videnskab.dk & ScienceNordic.com

Engaging with stakeholders within industry, government and beyond is essential to the uptake of the work and knowledge of the ICES community in wider society. Yet, conveying your scientific message to a wider audience can be difficult.

In this session, we will explore methods to present your research in a way that will get your work read and message heard. We will mix theory and practice, using examples of successful popular science communication, such as the techniques used at Videnskab.dk and ScienceNordic.com. We will also work with oral communication skill and discuss scientific evidence that talking to the press can boost citations.

With the increasing need to work across disciplines to solve societal challenges, the free flow of information between members of the ICES community is also of growing importance. As a consequence, sharpening ones communication skills has value beyond increasing public understanding as it can help breach interdisciplinary boundaries and help colleagues with different viewpoints catch a glimpse of a bigger picture.

Join us for an afternoon of tips and new inspiration for getting your message through. To be used, as and if you please, in your next presentation at the ASC, when discussing your science during the coffee breaks, on social media, in newspapers, policy briefings, or events.
