Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) and Logbook data

Spatial fisheries data used to evaluate fishing effort, intensity, and frequency

Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) automatically collect positional data from fishing vessels. The VMS data can be linked to catch data from logbooks to provide a census of spatially resolved catch and effort data.

The ICES VMS and Logbook database hosts highly detailed data on vessel positions, activity and catches gathered by the fishing industry that is provided to the national fisheries control agencies. The data contain detailed vessel movements and commercial information about catches.

VMS and Logbook data are used in ICES advice requiring spatial fisheries data, such as the Fisheries Overviews.

The governance of ICES VMS and Logbook data falls under the tenant of the Working Group for Spatial Fisheries Data Governance (WGSFDGOV).
