ICES Annual Science Conference 2026

Explore Brest

We can't wait to welcome you to ASC 2026 in Brest, France. Here, you'll find all the practical information you need to help you make the most of your time in Brest.

The city in a nutshell

  • Perched on a natural harbour, Brest mixes working docks, research vessels and sea views in almost every direction.
  • Rebuilt after the Second World War, it has a modern, slightly rough-around-the-edges charm that feels very “real port city” rather than postcard-perfect.

Ocean science playground

  • Brest is one of France’s top hotspots for marine science, home to major labs, ocean observatories and the “Campus mondial de la mer” network.
  • The nearby Bay of Brest is a living laboratory, where scientists track tides, nutrients, biodiversity and how human activity reshapes coastal ecosystems.

Getting to Brest (international travelers)

  • Fly into Paris (Charles de Gaulle or Orly), then hop on a direct TGV high-speed train to Brest; the ride is about 3.5–4 hours through Brittany’s countryside.
  • Alternatively, regional flights connect Brest Bretagne Airport with several European hubs, and from the airport a quick shuttle or taxi gets you into the city centre in around 15–20 minutes.
