As ocean challenges become increasingly complex and interconnected, researchers from both natural and social sciences must be equipped to work across disciplines, sectors, and knowledge systems. However, conventional academic training often falls short in preparing early career scientists (ECRs) for the realities of collaborative, policy-relevant, and inclusive marine science.
Building on the ‘interdisciplinary quest’ network session at the ASC 2024, this network session will take the next step by offering practical advice to support ECRs and others interested in navigating diverse career pathways - both within and beyond academia. The session will, among other things, highlight approaches for effective collaboration, writing for varied audiences, engaging with policy processes, and building professional networks. Participants will also explore reflective practices such as positionality, reflexivity, and equity in research design, and consider how these can enhance the quality and inclusiveness of marine science.
The session will address key topics including how to foster trusted relationships within research teams, select supportive mentors, and ensure safety and wellbeing during fieldwork. To maximise its value for participants, the session will be structured to encourage the sharing of experiences and collective learning. Facilitated discussions and interactive activities will be integrated throughout the session, creating space for reflection, peer exchange, and practical skill-building. By sharing lessons learned, practical tools, and diverse experiences, this session will help build the confidence and capacity of ECRs and others interested, to become future leaders in sustainable ocean stewardship and interdisciplinary marine science.
We invite all of you that want to reflect on training, mentorship, collaboration, and communication in marine research, and to discuss diverse formats -including case studies, conceptual frameworks, and applied tools- for strengthening inclusive, trust-based and collaborative processes for policy-relevant research.
