Oceanography and ecosystems: how are we advancing understanding of the linkages? How are oceanographic products progressing marine environmental management?
Ecosystem dynamics depend strongly on background oceanographic processes but, despite continued advances in our understanding of such relationships, incorporating this knowledge into management remains difficult. Current oceanographic products are achieving a level of maturity that should allow their use for science-based decision-making.
This theme session brings together oceanographers and marine ecosystem scientists to advance our knowledge on physical-biological linkages in a changing ocean. The session welcomes both oceanography-oriented contributions as well as studies of physical-biological relationships. Examples of topics where contributions are welcome are:
- Variability and long-term changes on hydrographical properties
- Drivers of short- and long-term changes in biological productivity
- Forecasting changes in the ocean and their consequences
- Physical drivers of contaminant and litter distributions and their consequences
- Oceanographic influences on dispersal of fish eggs and larvae and their consequences
- Harmful algal blooms distribution, detection and forecast
- Oceanographic influences on spread of invasive species
- Current and future trends in oceanographic influences on aquaculture
- Operational remote sensing and numerical modelling applied in fisheries
- Environmental conditions relation with fisheries
While the session is focused on the North Atlantic, global ocean or theoretical contributions also welcomed.
