ICES Annual Science Conference 2019

The ICES Prediction Cup

They say you can't predict fish stocks. Prove them wrong!

Compete in the #ICESPredictionCup against your colleagues and become the first ever ICES Prediction Champion.

For more than a century, marine scientists have tried to forecast fish stocks with little success. But today our ability to observe and forecast the ocean is unparalleled. Can the ICES community turn this data into reliable forecasts of fish stocks? At #ICESASC19, the Prediction Cup will test if this can be done and crown the first ICES Prediction Champion.

Participants in the Cup will compete, either individually or in teams, against each other to analyse supplied datasets of real fish stocks, with the aim of forecasting withheld data. The results that they generate will then be compared by the convenors against the truth, and the team that produces the most reliable forecasts will be crowned the ICES Prediction Champion for 2019.

The ICES Prediction Cup is the launch event for a broader prediction competition that will be run by WGS2D, the Working Group on Seasonal-to-Decadal Prediction of Marine Ecosystems (WGS2D).
