Northumberland WADER Project

Join this excursion to experience some of the demonstration activities and nature-based solutions that are being implemented as a result of the research that has taken place.

The WADER project uses a Catchment to Coast approach to investigate causes impacting on water bodies in six internationally important Natura 2000 sites. This five-year project is working to improve river, intertidal and marine habitats and the species that depend on them. The project area covers the stunning Northumberland Coast and the cross-border Tweed catchment between England and Scotland.

9am – 10:15am – Travel to Northumberland
10:15am - Upper Catchment Initiatives capturing nutrients at source 
11:00 – 11:30am- Travel to Budle Bay
11:30am – The Coast and Nature-Based Interventions capturing nutrients at the coast and impacts
12:15-12:30pm – Travel to Bamburgh / Seahouses for Lunch
1:00-1:10pm – Travel to Bamburgh
1:15pm - Invasive Species in Coastal Dune Systems protecting/enhancing natural coastal defences
2:15-3:30pm – Travel back to Newcastle

Max number of participants: The visit is limited to a number of 40 participants and seats will be given on a first come, first served basis. ​

Fee: 35€​

Registration: Sign up for the excursion at the same time as you register for the ASC. If you have already registered for the conference, send us an email and we will send you a excursion registration link.  ​

Your registration is binding once you have received a confirmation from ICES. Please make sure to cancel your slot if you are unable to attend. There will be a waiting list if the interest exceeds the limited number.​​​​

Please note, this excursion will not be on stable ground, with some elements of the visit going over floating pontoons and wetland terrain, and may be challenging for those with mobility challenges.​
