EU-FP6 Funded Marine Project Reports

FP6 PROTECT

Marine Protected areas as a tool for ecosystem conservation and fisheries management

Status: Completed (June 2008)
Coordinator: Danish Institute for Fisheries Research - DIFRES (now DTU Aqua)

PROTECT sought to provide European policy-makers with improved tools for the identification, design and management of MPAs. It brought together the collective expertise of 17 leading European marine research institutes which:

  • Evaluated the potential of MPAs as a tool to protect sensitive species and habitats against the effect of fishing
  • Developed scientific methods and information products to design and evaluate the effect of MPAs
  • Co-operated with other EU-funded projects, such as EMPAFISH
  • Organised a series of thematic workshops and compiled reports that drew from experience and lessons learnt from specific case studies

Since January 2008, the Danish Institute for Fisheries Research DIFRES has changed its name to DTU Aqua, National Institute of Aquatic Resources.
