How we work

ICES policy statement on net-zero CO2 emissions

As a world-leading science network, ICES provides impartial knowledge on the state and sustainable use of our seas and oceans and uses this knowledge to develop state-of-the-art recommendations for achieving conservation, management and sustainability goals.

ICES will continue to work to understand and reduce the emissions resulting from its meetings and other activities. ICES recognizes the value of in-person meetings, but hybrid and online meetings can also meaningfully replace and supplement in-person meetings. ICES will continue to promote and improve its facilities for remote participation to reduce emissions and improve inclusion.

In the coming decades, significant scientific effort will be required to help ICES member countries address climate change. ICES will continue developing science and advice needed to support the efforts of our member countries and the global marine scientific community to mitigate the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems, reduce emissions in maritime sectors, and enable adaptation where necessary.
