Dr Edward Hugh Allison

Eddie Allison's research centers on the human connection to natural resources. His primary areas of focus are

• the contribution of fisheries and aquaculture to food and nutrition security and coastal livelihoods,
• governance of small-scale fisheries and aquaculture production and the human rights of fisherfolk, and
• the vulnerability and adaptation to climate change of people dependent on marine and freshwater resources.

His work spans the globe, holding past positions in the field of fisheries and aquaculture management and development in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Oceania, Latin America and Europe, as researcher or technical and policy advisor for various international organizations. He has held faculty appointments at the University of East Anglia, and was the director of Policy, Economics, and Social Science at the WorldFish Center in Malaysia prior to coming to the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs. Dr. Allison received his Ph.D. in Fisheries Science from the University of Liverpool, England.

Dr. Alida Bundy
Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Fisheries and Oceans, Darthmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada

Dr. Bundy is a research scientist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Foremost her interest is in interdisciplinary science to support the sustainable use of our oceans. To this end, her research interests include the impact of fishing on marine ecosystems, the structure and functioning of ecosystems, ecosystem-based management and ecosystem based indicators of fishing impacts, adaptive management of fisheries and interdisciplinary approaches to fisheries science. She has led various projects on these themes within Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Internationally she is currently vice-chair of IMBER, co-Chair of the IMBER Human Dimension WG, co-Chair of IndiSeas (Indicators for the Seas) and co-Chair of the IndiSeas Human Dimension WG and a member of the Lenfest Ecosystem Task Force and the ICES Strategic Initiative on Human Dimensions (SHID).

Dr Anthony (Tony) Charles
Saint Mary's University, Halifax, Canada

Dr. Anthony Charles is Director of the School of the Environment, and professor in the School of Business, at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Canada. His research focuses on fishery and marine governance, management and socioeconomics, as well as sustainability of coastal and marine systems, community-based management, and human dimensions of ecosystem-based management. Dr. Charles authored the book Sustainable Fishery Systems and co-edited the new book Governance of Marine Fisheries and Biodiversity Conservation. He leads the Community Conservation Research Network, a global initiative on local conservation and livelihoods.  Dr. Charles is a Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation, a Gulf of Maine Visionary Award winner, and a member of the Fisheries Expert Group in IUCN.

Dr Mark Dickey-Collas (@DickeyCollas)

Dr Dickey-Collas facilitates the development of the ecosystem approach for sustainable exploitation of the marine ecosystem and regional ecosystem assessments at ICES.

Dickey-Collas has 20 years experience in providing fisheries science advice to national and international institutions and has a particular expertise in pelagic fish and fisheries, having worked in national fisheries science laboratories in Northern Ireland and the Netherlands. He liaises with OSPAR, HELCOM, IUCN, FAO, DGENV and the European Environment Agency on issues such as ecosystem assessment, Good Environmental Status (MSFD), vulnerable species and impacts of fishing. His scientific experience is in the field of population dynamics, ecosystem modelling and the policy/science interface and is documented through his peerreviewed publications.

Dickey-Collas has a thorough knowledge of the scientific infrastructure and governance frameworks of Europe and North America regularly working across EU framework programmes, national programmes and the Nordic Council of Ministers. He enjoys the challenges created when building and converting scientific knowledge into the evidence to guide policy development and has a proven track record of successfully working with stakeholders including government departments, industry representatives, skippers, NGOs and intergovernmental organisations from across Europe, North America, the North Atlantic and the Arctic.

Dr Beth Fulton
CSIRO, Hobart, Australi​​a

Dr Fulton is a Principal Research Scientist with CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere Flagship where she heads the ecosystem modelling team. Beth is also a member of the Centre of Marine Socioecology, a collaboration between University of Tasmania, CSIRO and the Australian Antarctic Division. Over the past 20 years, Dr Fulton has developed various system modelling tools for looking at marine ecosystems and sustainability, giving equal attention to biophysical and human components of marine and coastal ecosystems. They are used to underpin research into sustainable multiple use management and conservation of marine and coastal environments and adaptation to global change.

Dr. Serge Michel Garcia

Dr Garcia is a former Research Director of the French Institute of Research for Development (IRD, France) and former Director of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Management Division. Retired since March 2007, he chairs the Fisheries Expert Group of the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management (IUCN-CEM-FEG) and is a member of the European Bureau for Conservation and Development (EBCD) board. He has worked as consultant for a range of international organization including FAO, UNEP, CCSBT, IUCN, and the World Bank. He recently led the publication of books on MPAs and fisheries (PUP, 2013) and on Governance of marine fisheries and biodiversity conservation (Wiley-Blackwell, 2014).

Paul Holthus
founding President/CEO, World Ocean Council

Paul Holthus is the founding President/CEO of the World Ocean Council (WOC), the international business leadership alliance on corporate ocean responsibility. The WOC brings together oil and gas, shipping, fisheries, aquaculture, tourism, offshore renewables, seabed mining, and other ocean industries. The WOC is an unprecedented ocean business community that creates private sector leadership in addressing shared marine sustainability challenges.

Mr. Holthus has worked in over 30 countries with companies, communities, industry associations, UN agencies, international non-governmental organisations and foundations. He has held senior positions with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and international environmental organisations, including serving as Deputy Director of the IUCN Global Marine Programme. Among other things, he originated the “Coral Triangle” concept, a successful large seascape approach to international sustainable ocean development.

Since 1998, Mr. Holthus has worked primarily with the private sector to develop practical solutions to ocean sustainability and responsible use. He is a frequent speaker at international ocean and industry conferences. He was one of 5 people invited to be a member of the UN Secretary General’s Expert Group on Oceans for the 2012 Rio+20 conference, and is on the Advisory Committee of The Economist World Ocean Summit.

He is a graduate of the University of California and University of Hawaii, was a Fulbright scholar in Australia and is an East-West Center alum.

Torgeir Edvardsen,
Senior Econmist, OECD

Torgeir Edvardsen has more than 20 years of experience as a researcher within accounting, management control and strategy. Up until November 2013 in a position as Special Advisor in the International Projects Department of SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture, he worked primarily on promoting national and European research programmes established.

Edvardsen was one of the founding fathers of the European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform and its first Secretary General. Until April 2014 he was member of the Board of Directors of the platform, its treasurer, the BoDs representative in the Operative Council and the coordinator for the Thematic Areas. He was also one of the founding fathers of the European Fisheries Technology Platform where he sat in its Board of Directors for a number of years. Edvardsen has founded and edited a journal, published books, many reports, scientific papers and popular articles, chaired national and international symposia and meetings, delivered speeches and keynote speeches at national and international meetings, workshops, symposia and congresses.

Since November 2013 as a Senior Economist at the OECD Edvardsen has been the manager of The Future of the Ocean Economy Project at the OECD International Futures Programme. 

W. (Pim) Visser
Chief Executive, VisNed, The Netherlands

Studied at the Nijenrode Business School BBA (1978) and de
Rotterdam School of Management MBA (1981) Pim. Visser started his career in the IT Consultancy from1981 to 1982. From 1982 to 2002 he worked at Projects and Sales in Shipbuilding for the Dutch and International Fishing Industry. Since 2002 Pim Visser is manager of Manager Fish Auctions Northern Holland, in which capacity he was president of EAFPA (European Ports and Auctions 2004-2010).

Now Pim Visser combines the (now part-time) management of the fish auctions with several positions:

Simon A. Levin
Princeton University, Princeton, USA

Simon A. Levin received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Maryland. After 27 years on the faculty of Cornell University, he moved to Princeton University, where he is currently George M. Moffett Professor of Biology. Levin is a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, among other organizations, and a former President of the Ecological Society of America and of the Society for Mathematical Biology.  His international awards include the Heineken Prize for Environmental Sciences, the Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences, the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, the Margalef Prize in Ecology, and the Luca Pacioli Award.

Linwood Pendleton
Duke University, Durham, USA/UMR AMURE, IUEM, UBO, France

An environmental economist who holds the International Chair of Excellence at the European Institute for Marine Studies (IUEM) of the University of West Brittany (UBO), part of the Laboratory of Excellence in Brest, France. He is a Senior Scholar at Duke's Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions (NIEPS), and the director of the Marine Ecosystem Services Partnership. 

Pendleton was the Acting Chief Economist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from 2011-2013, and is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Duke University Marine Laboratory.  He holds masters degrees in Public Administration from Harvard University and Ecology from Princeton University, and a doctoral degree in Forestry and Environmental Studies from Yale University in 1997.

Dr Jake Rice
Chief Scientist – Emeritus for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Over his career Dr Rice worked on many aspects of ecosystem approaches and governance of fisheries and marine biodiversity, and the science – policy interface in marine issues, with over 250 scientific and technical publications. He has participated in expert workshops and been a delegate at many marine intergovernmental organizations. He was a member of the Group of Experts for the UN Regular Process and co-chairs the IPBES Regional Assessment for the Americas. Dr Rice has held many roles in ICES, including the Chair of the Consultative Committee.
