The ICES Strategic Initiative for Stock Assessment Methods (SISAM) was designed to assure that scientists can apply the best stock assessment methods when developing management advice for fisheries. The first stage of SISAM culminated in a simulation-based workshop to evaluate performance of stock assessment methods and the World Conference on Stock Assessment Methods (WCSAM), in 2013 in Boston, USA.
The second stage of SISAM involves continued coordination with Regional Fishery Management Organizations and national agencies, the development of "good practice" guidelines, and transition to a Global Assessment Methods Expert group (GAME).
This open session informs the audience on SISAM objectives, progress and plans, and encourages discussion to develop the scope and vision of the transition to GAME. Initial invited presentations will provide background information on:
- ICES Strategic Initiative on Stock Assessment Methods (objectives, model categories, World Conference on Stock Assessment Methods, simulation testing workshop)
- Topical Workshops – 'globalization' of the Center for the Advancement of Population Assessment Methodology (CAPAM) approach
- Organizational alternatives for a global expert group (governance, frequency, membership).
Participants are welcome to contribute their feedback and ideas in a facilitated discussion.
