There is an increased willingness and drive from fishing industries to contribute new data and knowledge to ICES science. The contribution of industry data to ICES science, provides an opportunity to enhance knowledge and design new ways of improving the quality of ICES output. Continuity of representative and reliable data is one key issue in this. New and ongoing Data Collection provided by industry, will require thorough procedures for quality validation and representativeness, just like the procedures applied to established data streams from National laboratories.
The Workshop to Evaluate the Utility of Industry-derived data (WKEVUT) aims to enhance the potential application of industrial data in ICES science by:
1. asses the quality and potential of industry-derived data to enhance scientific knowledge and to provide data for stock assessments.
2. to provide an overview of fishing industry data collection initiatives and compare the results of such initiatives with data from National Sampling Programs (under the Data Collection Framework EC 2017/1004) to assess the added value in terms of end-user needs, quality, representativity, ecological understanding and use in stock assessments.
3. to support the broadening of the knowledge base on fisheries and ecosystems that is required as part of an ecosystem approach to fisheries management.
