Ecosystem overviews (EOs) are central products to support the operational implementation of ecosystem-based management approaches. They inform expert working groups, the scientific community Regional Seas Conventions, policy makers, national authorities, intergovernmental management authorities, and organisations.
The recent workshop on the fourth-generation ecosystem overviews (WKEO4) identified ways forward to improve the utility of ecosystem overviews and how they can better meet advisory and decision-making needs. The objective of the Workshop for the prototyping of the Norwegian Sea Ecosystem Overview (WKSHADOW) is to develop a novel EO for the Norwegian Sea Ecoregion that builds from WKEO4 recommendations. The outputs of the workshop will serve as a basis for future ICES advice and will inform the second workshop on methods and guidelines for Ecosystem Overviews (WKTRANSPARENT2).
WKSHADOW will consider existing and new topics for inclusion in the EO, as well as formats used to communicate EO content. These will include integrated risk assessment, selection and calculation of suitable indicators, emerging issues, forecasts, future outlooks, policy and management objectives, use of online tools, and infographics. WKSHADOW will report on the feasibility and challenges in applying the new EO, provide recommendations for future implementation, and identify priority next steps.
