Workshop on Assessing the impacts of fishing on oceanic carbon

8 - 10 April 2025
ICES Headquarters, Copenhagen, Denmark

The impact of climate change on marine ecosystems is a key issue that ICES builds into its work. The activities of this workshop will contribute to knowledge related to the carbon impacts of fisheries, as well as the climate implications of fish extraction, thus contributing to ecosystem-based management development. Since ocean carbon sequestration is highly important from the climate change mitigation and adaptation point of view, these activities are considered to have a very high priority. This workshop builds on WKFISHCARBON 1 (2023).

The workshop will cover three core topics:

  • The role of fish in the context of the biological pump and the impact of fishing on the biological pump
  • The impact of benthic fishing on sediment carbon stores
  • The release of greenhouse gases from fishing vessels

The workshop will be run in-person, with some given talks available to be streamed online.
