The loss of long-term scientific survey areas due to marine protected areas (MPAs) along with the disruption of these surveys by offshore renewable energy (ORE) require adjustments that need to be carefully considered within ICES member countries. As per ICES Roadmap for Offshore Renewable Energy, there is a need to develop an ICES strategy to address the impacts of ORE on long-term scientific surveys to continue to provide timely, accurate, and precise scientific advice to support fisheries and ecosystem management.
Many ICES member countries are experiencing large-scale offshore renewable energy development as well as the implementation of large MPAs (the UK intends to designate 30% of its marine area as MPAs by 2030). Member countries will require tools and methods to modify and modernize scientific surveys.
This workshop will focus on three areas:
- Interactions of MPA and OREs on long-term scientific surveys across ICES regions,
- Scientific & Management approaches to address the impacts from MPAs and OREs on long-term scientific surveys, and
- Advancing an ICES Strategy to mitigate the impacts of MPAs and OREs on scientific surveys, assessment, and advice.
