WGMEDS is a spin-off from the Workshop on Methods for Estimating Discard Survival (WKMEDS) established in January 2014 in response to a request from the European Commission to address the urgent need for guidance on methods, as identified by STECF EWG 13-16.
The primary aim of this working group is to critically review current estimates of discard survival, conduct meta-analyses with these data, and to improve the understanding of the explanatory variables associated with discard mortality. It is anticipated that this information will be disseminated to other interested groups so it can be applied, including to stock assessment groups and researchers looking for practical measures to improve the survival of discarded catches.
