Call for participants: workshop on finding methods to assess data-limited fish stocks

WKLIFE, a workshop on the development of quantitative assessment methodologies for stocks categorized as data-limited, takes place 2-6 October in Lisbon, Portugal.
Published: 11 September 2017

ICES provides scientific catch advice to decision makers for more than 260 stocks in the northeast Atlantic. To achieve this, fish stocks are categorized by the type and quality of data available and assessment approach. To date, more than 60% of stocks in the ICES area lack high quality data and scientific stock assessment methods – these  stocks are categorized as data-limited. Developing assessment methodologies for such stocks is a high priority for the ICES community.

From the 2-6 October 2017, experts from around the world will convene at the 7th meeting of WKLIFE: ICES Workshop on the development of quantitative assessment methodologies based on life-history traits, exploitation characteristics, and other relevant parameters for stocks categorized as data-limited. At the workshop, methods for assessing stock status and providing science-based catch advice for a diverse array of species are developed and tested. The focus will be on two core areas: specific methods for short-lived stocks, and proposing advice rules that lead to appropriate performance for catch advice according to the MSY approach across all ICES stocks.

WKLIFE VII will be  held  in Lisbon, Portugal, and is open to all interested participants. For further information and to confirm your participation in the workshop contact Anne Cooper at the ICES Secretariat.
