ICES Strategic Initiative on Integration of Early Career Scientists (SIIECS) was established in 2021 to promote ICES amongst early career scientists (ECS) in the global marine science community ICES and to encourage the inclusion of ECS within ICES. One of SIIECS' key achievements has been the inclusion of an ECS as a keynote speaker at the Annual Science Conference (ASC) for the past three years.
This is an exceptional opportunity for an ECS to present their research, build their career, and engage with the marine science community. Tom Langbehn, a researcher at the University of Bergen in Norway, was chosen as the ECS keynote for this year's ASC in Gateshead, UK. Remarking on the experience, he said, “Early in our careers, we rarely get the opportunity to step back and reflect on what we have actually accomplished so far and how it all fits together. For me, this keynote provided such an opportunity to synthesize my work, weave together different strands, and work on the key messages".
Nominations will close at midnight on Sunday 10 November. The selected candidate will be contacted within one month of the nomination deadline and will have one week to confirm their availability.
Langbehn's talk, The ecological mechanics of light and life in the open ocean, can be viewed online, as well as the 2023 ECS keynote New horizons in seafood traceability: when advances in molecular tools change the landscape by Marine Cusa, Policy Advisor at Oceana, and 2022 keynote Marine ecosystems under change: Do we face a more gelatinous future? by Cornelia Jaspers, DTU Aqua, Denmark.
