Gateshead on the horizon

From science to sightseeing: What to expect at ICES ASC 2024 in Gateshead.
Published: 15 August 2024

In just under one month, the marine science community will descend on the northeast of England, turning Gateshead into a marine science hub for one week. This year's ASC brings together leaders in our organization and the marine science world for an in-depth exploration of current challenges and advancements. As our Annual Science Conference (ASC) approaches, excitement is building for what promises to be a successful week of science, dynamic discussions, and valuable networking opportunities in Gateshead, UK.

Keynote speakers

The conference will feature keynote presentations from Louisa EvansUniversity of Exeter,
Jenni Prokkola, Luke Natural Resources Institute Finland, and Tom Langbehn, University of Bergen. Attendees can look forward to engaging talks that will offer insights into transdisciplinary research, building ocean resilience, and the ecological mechanics of light and life in the ocean.

A diverse array of theme sessions

Participants can delve into 18 theme sessions, each tackling crucial aspects of marine science. Sessions range from science for ecosystem-based management to operational ecosystem-based management, from observation and exploration to emerging techniques and technologies. Theme session E will explore how we develop applied evidence for biodiversity conservation and management, Theme session G looks at the ecosystem outcomes of co-existence with offshore renewable energy,  a hot topic as the world seeks sustainable energy solutions. Theme session J will ask how we can use the latest developments from machine learning and AI to better exploit big data, while Theme session P will discuss the climate impacts and adaptation responses in marine fishery systems. The diversity of topics ensures that whether your focus is on fisheries management, biodiversity conservation, climate change, or the application of AI in marine science, there is a session that will resonate with your interests.

There are also five network sessions taking place. These will be interactive, engaging sessions addressing topics such as interdisciplinaritycreating supportive fieldwork environments in marine sciences, and AI, culminating with an ICES Showdown between ICES Science and Advice 'families' who will compete to see who can best capture the pulse of the community and emerging 'hot topics'.

Engaging early career scientists

We continue our commitment to nurturing the next generation of marine scientists with a programme tailored for early career professionals. The ASC will offer various events including a graphic design workshop to enhance participants' skills in scientific visual communication. The Monday Morning breakfast allows early career scientists to connect with key figures within ICES and learn how to become more involved in the community. First-time attendees can also take advantage of the ASC Mentor Program, an introduction to the conference and the organization, fostering connections that can lead to long-term professional relationships.

Gateshead and Newcastle

Beyond the conference, Gateshead and Newcastle offer a variety of attractions for visitors. ICES Professional officer and Tyneside local, Neil Campbell, suggests several must-see spots. Jesmond Dene, a picturesque park just east of the city centre, is perfect for a peaceful stroll or a morning jog. The Baltic Flour Mill, a modern art gallery located near the conference venue, offers an incredible space filled with abstract and contemporary art. History enthusiasts might enjoy exploring Newcastle Castle, which dates back to the eleventh century. For those looking to venture a little further afield, a trip to the coast is highly recommended. The nearby coastal towns of Cullercoats, Whitley Bay, and Monkseaton offer stunning promenades. If the weather is not compliant with your walk, Campbell suggests stopping in to Spanish City for a spot of afternoon tea.
