Copenhagen has been the setting for many significant moments in our organization’s history. It was here, on 22 July 1902, that Danish Prime Minister Johan Henrik Deuntzer welcomed delegates for the very first meeting of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea. In September 1964, delegates gathered at Christiansborg Palace to discuss and sign the Convention that continues to underpin our work today.
As we stand ready to mark another significant ICES moment - our 125th anniversary! - it feels fitting to invite the marine science community to celebrate with us in the Danish capital at our 2027 Annual Science Conference (ASC).
ICES flagship event
The ASC is a place to share the latest research, spark new ideas, and build partnerships. The scientific programme should inspire everyone to engage and contribute, from students and early career scientists to senior scientists and leaders of research institutes.
We are now accepting proposals for theme sessions and network sessions. Sessions should be accessible to a broad audience of marine scientists. We especially welcome proposals from early-career researchers and underrepresented groups.
What is the difference between a theme session and a network session?
Theme sessions are structured, presentation-based sessions that showcase new scientific findings aligned with ICES Science Plan. They typically include talks and posters and are led by an international team of conveners.
Network sessions, on the other hand, are more flexible and interactive. They provide space for dialogue, collaboration, and early-stage ideas and, as such, are ideal for testing emerging science, building partnerships, or exploring new data or advisory needs.
You can learn more about the purpose of theme sessions and network sessions in the ASC sessions guide. Examples of theme and network session proposals are also available to help structure your submission.
How to submit?
Submit your proposal via the online form. The deadline for submitting proposals is 27 August 2026.
Unsuccessful proposals from previous years will not be considered unless they are resubmitted via the online form. Proposers of selected theme and network sessions will be informed in October 2026.
We look forward to an interesting programme at ICES ASC 2027!
