Objective
The course will provide a general introduction to Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE) by covering a range of topics with associated case studies and practical sessions, equipping participants with the knowledge, skills, and quantitative tools to undertake MSEs on their own fisheries resources.
The course will pair theoretical lectures with case studies from around the world and will cover topics such as operating models, harvest control rules, uncertainty, and risk. Examples of technical interactions and the use of an environmental index in a Harvest Control Rule (HCR) will also be explored. Small group discussions and worked examples (HCRs in Excel and a full MSE in FLR) will be used to turn concepts into practice.
Level
The level is introductory, but experience with stock assessment models used to provide management advice, and with Excel and R will be helpful. A brief introduction to FLR will be given during the course.
