WKSUP

Workshop on SUPporting the EU Action Plan to restore marine ecosystems ; harbour porpoise in the Baltic proper

Meeting dates: 17-20 June 2024
Location: ICES HQ Copenhagen, Denmark (hybrid meeting)

Bycatch is a major threat to the harbour porpoise in the Baltic Sea. The European Commission has developed an Action Plan under which it recommends Member States to adopt national measures or submit joint recommendations to the Commission to minimise bycatch (or reduce it to the level that enables the full recovery of the populations) of harbour porpoise in the Baltic Sea by end 2023.

The workshop (WKSUP) is directly linked to a special request to ICES from DGMARE on 'Support for the implementation of the Action Plan (III)'.  Work carried out WKSUP will contribute to completing this task. Among the aims of WKSUP is to develop a bycatch risk assessment for harbour porpoises in the Baltic Proper, with focus on the Baltic Proper porpoise population.
