Calculation and evaluation of new reference points for category 1-2 stocks

5-9 February 2024
ICES HQ, Copenhagen, Denmark
(possibilty of remote participation)

This workshop explores the definitions and methods for the calculation of reference points proposed by recent ICES working groups WKREF1 and WKREF2. The objective is to go beyond theory and draw recommendations based on a representative set of practical cases.

WKNEWREF will estimate the reference points based on the guidelines of WKREF1 and WKREF2 and will investigate their statistical properties and performance in detail. In particular, the new reference points will be compared to the old ones and advantages and disadvantages of both approaches will be identified. Where none of the approaches provide adequate reference points, and if possible, alternative approaches to calculate them will be proposed. A common approach will be used in a representative set of stocks across ICES ecoregions which will allow to derive conclusions based on empirical data.

The conclusions and recommendations of the workshop will form the science base for the revision of the current ICES reference points guidelines.
