The Ecosystem Approaches and Methods Steering Group (EAMSG) is responsible for guiding and supporting Expert Groups that develop ecosystem approaches and methods including inter alia integrated ecosystem assessment (IEA), ecosystem modelling, cumulative effects assessments (CEA), risk assessments, trend analyses, indicator and threshold development, and spatial analyses. The EAMSG leads the development of the regional Ecosystem Overviews, key ICES ecosystem advice products. The EAMSG engages across disciplines, employing multi-disciplinary and participatory approaches to produce the ecosystem-informed science and advice necessary for Ecosystem-Based Management.
Topics covered include:
- Method development and application for integrated assessments of the ecosystem, including risk assessments, integrated ecosystem assessment, cumulative effects assessments, indicator development, trend analyses, etc.
- The development, use, and coupling of ecosystem modelling approaches (including physical models, biogeochemical models, models of intermediate complexity, food-web models, end-to-end models, conceptual models, social models, and economic models) to investigate interactions and trade-offs between management, policy, and societal objectives.
- Identifying relevant regional stakeholder groups to direct and inform research efforts, employing multi-disciplinary and participatory EBM approaches.
- The development of integrated ecosystem assessments for the Azores, Baltic Sea, Northern Bering Sea-Chukchi Sea, Bay of Biscay and the Iberian Coast, Celtic Seas, Central Arctic Ocean, Greater North Sea, Greenland Sea, Icelandic Waters, Norwegian Sea, and Northwest Atlantic Regional Sea.
- The development of Ecosystem Overviews for the Azores, Baltic Sea, Barents Sea, Bay of Biscay and the Iberian Coast, Celtic Seas, Central Arctic Ocean, Faroes, Greater North Sea, Greenland Sea, Icelandic Waters, Norwegian Sea, and Oceanic Northeast Atlantic.
- The development of ecosystem-informed science and advice, informed by the needs of stakeholders and decision makers, for Ecosystem-Based Management.
