Tackling such key issues as the contribution of fisheries management towards Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and the impacts of fishing practices and gear upon marine habitats and species, the meeting will aim at assisting the Baltic Sea states in fulfilling their respective conservation obligations – both in terms of MPAs and a more EU-based and global capacity.
The conference, organized by HELCOM and ICES and supported by the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR), will involve policy-makers, scientific researchers, and fishermen's association representatives and will also focus on the development and review of the Generic Tool – a programme which identifies potential fisheries conflicts with MPAs and provides guidance for possible fishing gear solutions.
