The WISE-Marine website is now live after being officially launched at the EU’s Our Ocean Conference 2017, 5-6 October in Malta.
The
web-based portal is for sharing information on the marine environment across
European seas, making data available according to common standards. This
information will be in support of policy-making and measuring progress towards
attaining the good environmental status (GES) as laid down in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive
(MSFD) as well as
other EU-level policies.
WISE-Marine
was developed in a partnership between the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment (DG
ENV), the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the European Environment Agency (EEA), and Eurostat. ICES was among other key
contributors that also included the EC’s Directorate-General for Maritime
Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) and Directorate General for Research and Innovation (DG
RTD) and Regional
Seas Conventions.
ICES has
been on the steering group, helping with strategic direction, as well as with
work on elaborating the metadata catalogue and data visualization.
