The programme is for a period of 12-24 months. This is a part-time (a few hours per month), remote educational opportunity.
Goals of the programme
• Provide professional development for early career scientists in scientific publishing, peer review, the editorial decision-making process, and scientific writing.
• Provide mentees with opportunities to explore personal interests in some aspect(s) of science, scientific writing, editing and publishing, and to communicate their experiences to fellow early career scientists and to others.
Expectations and benefits
• Shadow a member of the editorial board (who agrees to mentor them) to learn about the different steps in the manuscript evaluation and editorial decision-making process
• Participate in occasional meetings with the Journal’s Editor-in-Chief (EiC), their editor-mentor, and other mentees to discuss tools and approaches to evaluate manuscripts
• Interact with the EiC and their editor-mentor in order to better understand Journal processes, policies, and new trends/challenges in scientific publishing
• Participate in the annual editorial board meeting, offering an opportunity to gain insight into journal operations and to network with >70 other editors
• Explore topics of special interest to you (e.g. participate in the development and/or editing of a themed article initiative) and gain knowledge of new topics outside your main lines of research
• Preview some of the latest research in your field
• Communicate your experiences via social media posts, blogs, articles in the ICES Newsletter, and/or virtual events
• Act as ambassadors for ICES JMS, particularly to early career scientists
• Possibility of being recruited to the editorial board after successfully completing the program
Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of the EiC and members of the Journal’s editorial board. A shortlist of potential candidates will be interviewed by videoconference. At least three mentees will be selected early in 2023, with mentees to begin during the second half of 2023.
