A workshop to analyse trawl data and develop a new marine indicator
Published: 12 October 2018

The workshop on methods to develop a swept-area based effort index (WKSABI) is open for participants.

The workshop will look into establishing an effort estimate based in trawl swept-area, applicable for all trawl surveys across ICES countries and ecoregions. The data from these surveys is stored in ICES online database of trawl surveys (DATRAS). This new effort index will ideally reduce biases in calculations resulting from other effort measures based on variables such as types of fishing vessel and gears.

The workshop will also apply the swept-area indices in defining a fish size indicator, and a marine litter indicator as case studies. These two cases studies are of great interest for their potential to be used as ecosystem indicators in ICES ecosystem overviews.

Participants with a broad range of expertise and from all ICES regions are encouraged to apply in order to ensure the wide applicability and use of the index.  This includes ecologists, gear specialists, and survey and assessment group experts.

The workshop takes place on 8-9 January 2019 at ICES Headquarters in Copenhagen. If you are interested in participating, contact Adriana Villamor at our Secretariat.
