Workshop on the Review and Future of State Space Stock Assessment Models in ICES (WKRFSAM)

WKRFSAM will focus on future directions of state-space assessment models for ICES stocks, utilizing recent advances in fisheries modelling research to help define best practices.

Chair Noel Cadigan, Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research, Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland would especially like to invite stock assessment scientists who can contribute with their experience in applying state-space fish stock assessment models, including what they see as the advantages and disadvantages of the approach, and what they feel should be improved for future assessments.

Cadigan would like "to make substantial progress towards defining best practice for state-space stock assessment model formulation and to improve understanding of the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of the underlying formulations of current state space models, and also extending models to include new dynamics and new data sets.

WKRFSAM will take place 21–23 January 2020 at ICES HQ, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Workshop on guidelines and methods for the evaluation of rebuilding plans (WKREBUILD)

When advising zero TACs for the following year, ICES has regularly recommended rebuilding plans in combination. This is especially when stocks are estimated to be below Blim and there is no perceived possibility of rebuilding above Blim within the time-frame of a short-term forecast. However, there are no currently agreed methods or guidelines on evaluating rebuilding plans.

The chairs of WKREBUILD, Vanessa Trijoulet from DTU Aqua
and Martin Pastoors from the Pelagic Freezer-trawler Association, hope to attract a broad range of participants, "so that we can cover the methodological, the advisory, and the policy aspects of the terms of reference - stakeholders, policy managers, fisheries representatives, scientists with experience and/or interest in rebuilding plans and tools for short-term evaluations of potential effects of rebuilding plans."

These participants will review the history of scientific advice, evaluation, and implementation of rebuilding plans for fisheries management in the Northeast Atlantic and other fora, and the technical tools that could evaluate the performance of different types of rebuilding plans.

Trijoulet hopes the workshop can develop guidelines for the evaluation of rebuilding plans that take into account the precautionary approach, the species life history, changes in productivity, and rebuilding potential, as well as propose criteria for the acceptability of rebuilding plans including rebuilding target, time and probability that would be consistent with international best practices.

WKREBUILD takes place 24–28 February 2020 at ICES HQ, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Scoping workshop on the future of mixed fisheries advice (WKMIXFISH 2020)

WKMIXFISH 2020 will review recent scientific developments on mixed fisheries analysis, modelling, and visualization to create awareness of what is currently achievable.

Along with advice recipients and stakeholders, the workshop will identify a range of questions on mixed fisheries in the context of policy objectives such as achieving MSY, spatial management, discard reduction (landings obligation), improving selection, and ecosystem approach, as well as consider methods to improve the communication of mixed fisheries information and advice.

Chaired by Paul Dolder, Cefas, WKMIXFISH takes place 3–5 March 2020 at ICES HQ, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Workshop on the Ecosystem Based Management of the Baltic Sea (WKBALTIC)

WKBALTIC will ask stakeholders to identify issues that they feel represent management needs for the major Baltic fish species in the context of ecosystem-based management (EBM) and link these to specific broader management issues, such as mixed-fisheries interactions, ecosystem drivers of fisheries productivity, and inter- and intra-specific interactions.

The workshop aims for co-production of knowledge and understanding, and the potential for stakeholders to provide information (data) to examine the hypotheses, and fill the data gaps will be a primary objective for the meeting.

Chairs Rüdiger Voss, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, and David Reid, Marine Institute, say, "In particular, the stakeholders can help improve our understanding of where there are conflicts, where trade-offs need to be made, and where management is not properly addressing issues. Our ultimate aim is to do better and more responsive science, that directly addresses the burning issues of the stakeholders. Better knowledge should lead to better management. For sure, bad knowledge will lead to bad management!"

WKBALTIC, chaired by Rüdiger Voss and David Reid, will take place 25–26 February 2020 at ICES HQ, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Workshop on methods and guidelines to link human activities, pressures and state of the ecosystem in Ecosystem Overviews (WKTRANSPARENT)

ICES Ecosystem Overviews are central products to support our ecosystem-based management approach, through providing the ecoregion context, identifying main pressures, associated human activities and impacts on ecosystem state. The process of designing the third generation of Ecosystem Overviews recently began (WKEO3 2019), with the identification of concrete steps and follow-up actions, one of which is WKTRANSPARENT.

WKTRANSPARENT will develop guidelines for an ecosystem structure overview diagram, offering an easily understandable introduction to each ecoregion ecosystem. Participants will also examine ways to link the identified high-priority pressures to ecosystem functions and processes and review guidelines for assessing and prioritizing among drivers, stressors and impacts.

The workshop will also adapt a simplified set of best practices for Ecosystem Overviews that will ensure transparency in assessments, communication of uncertainties, and allow different approaches to be used in different regions depending on data availability, skills, and the capacity of ICES expert groups.

The chairs, Henn Ojaveer, ICES, and Mette Mauritzen, Institute of Marine Research, invite all scientists that are interested in contributing to and further advancing ICES Ecosystem Overviews, including those in IEA groups, and from various backgrounds, such as natural sciences, economic, and social sciences. This will allow taking an inclusive and comprehensive approach to ensure interdisciplinary contributions to Ecosystem Overviews.

WKTRANSPARENT, chaired by Henn Ojaverr and Mette Mauritzen will take place 21–23 April 2020 at ICES HQ, Copenhagen, Denmark.
