Future data challenges - and opportunities

The Data and Information Group (DIG) held its annual meeting at ICES Headquarters this week.
Published: 1 June 2018

The SCICOM operational group identified and prioritized three challenges related to data and technology that will impact the ICES community: machine learning, cloud environments and related services, as well as Open Data and code sharing.

There are already activities established in the organization to explore these challenges, such as the Workshop on Uses of Machine Learning in Marine Science (WKMLEARN) and the Workshop on Integration and Visualization of ICES Data (WKINVITED).

Looking towards the next iteration of the ICES strategic plan, DIG adopted a risk based management approach to these challenges/opportunities. The cross-discipline group will be actively monitoring developments both within the ICES community, and the marine domain in general.

“This approach will allow responsive recommendations towards the ICES infrastructure as the technology and data landscape evolve", commented Jens Rasmussen, the DIG Chair.
