The ICES Working Group on the Biology and Life History of Crabs (WGCRAB) look at key issues surrounding crab species.

Crab species represent some of the most valuable fisheries within the ICES area and fishing effort has increased in many of these fisheries requiring adequate assessments and management advice.

The work of the WGCRAB highlights issues regarding:

  • Impact of climate changes on important crab species

  • Stock biology (reproduction/recruitment, growth and distribution)

  • Fishery performance (discards and landings)

  • Assessment methods (stock models, management reference points, etc.)

  • Impact on ecosystem of invasive crab species
