Workshop on Estimation of Rare Events

3-7 October 2022
Lisbon, Portugal

Statistically sound sampling schemes and appropriate sample size are important to obtain fisheries data that reflects the population of interest and thus result in estimates that are approximately unbiased. However, for rare events e.g. bycatch, discard, catch of non-targeted species, that is seldom the case (i.e. low and unbalanced sample size, poor coverage, etc.). Therefore, fishery scientists and ecologists are often faced to making inferences from data with many zero values and high variance but the suitability of these methods (for achieving a certain precision and unbiasedness) have not yet been fully explored.

This workshop will explore and summarize existing methods for estimating rare events and test the performance of these methods through a spatially-explicit simulation framework that can mimic a variety of rare-events scenarios.

Registration

The meeting will be held as a hybrid event. If you are interested in joining, contact us by 9 September and let us know if you wish to attend in-person or remotely via WebEx.

If the workshop is oversubscribed, ICES reserves the right, in consultation with the workshop chairs, to select the final workshop participants based on their expertise, and equitable makeup of the workshop.
