Report on the present research activities in the field of mariculture in ICES member countries. Edited by Tiews, K.

The Committee was established by ICES with the task of formulating, on behalf of the Council, scientific advice on marine pollution and its effects on living resources to the Member Governments and to Regulatory Commissions.

The number of wild Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) has periodically declined throughout
their native range (Chaput, 2012; ICES, 2015). This has been offset to some degree
by historical management initiatives such as habitat protection and restoration, harvest
restrictions, and fish health actions which have mitigated some declines. For at least
two decades, however, declines in abundance have continued (ICES, 2015) and mitigation
options are limited (Parrish et al., 1998), which has led to the call for more focused
marine research to assess the reasons for this persistent decline. The status of the wild
salmon populations in both North America and Europe has shown a clear geographical
pattern over the past 30 years, with most populations in the southern extent of their
range in decline, with more northerly populations being generally stable, while populations
at intermediate latitudes have been more variable (e.g. Parrish et al., 1998; ICES,
2002). While some of the problems can be attributed to the construction of dams, pollution
(including acid rain), water abstraction, overfishing, changing ocean conditions,
and intensive aquaculture, many declines cannot be fully explained.

Data are collected from a variety of acoustic systems in many countries to address a
range of ecosystem monitoring and stock management objectives. A key step in the
analysis of fisheries acoustics data is target classification, i.e. categorizing the backscatter
data, ultimately by target species, so that it can be converted into estimates of abundance
or biomass. The information needed to classify acoustic targets may be contained
within the acoustic measurements, particularly if they are made over a range of frequencies.

Cooperative research undertaken from 1986-90 by ICES WG on the "effects of extraction of marine sediments on fisheries" (Marine environmental quality committee). Previously (1972-79) known as "effects on fisheries of marine sand and gravel extraction.

Reports from the Working Group from meetings in Copenhagen (June, 1987), Rejkjavik (July, 1988), and Nantes (November, 1989).

Update of the manual to fisheries scientists and technologists describing the methods for measuring the selectivity of most types of fishing gear: trawl, Danish seines, gill nets and hooks.

An update to the North Sea Stomach Sampling Project in 1981 - a large-scale, international, cooperative programme.

This report contents responses from ACME, ICES to the requests made at the Oslo, Paris and Helsinki Commissions, and other topics of potential interest for which ACME had not been asked directly but relevant as per ACME discrection.

Assessment of individual age through the use of calcified structures (scales, otoliths, opercular bones, fin rays, etc.) has been proven to be very useful in assessing the status of any fish stock.
