Written by Ivone Figueiredo and Teresa Moura.

Throughout his career, Ricardo made an outstanding contribution to fisheries science and stock assessment, dedicating his knowledge, expertise, and energy to advancing scientific understanding and supporting the sustainable management of marine resources. Extremely dedicated to his commitments, Ricardo was involved in such diverse work as data collection, lab work, and modelling.

Ricardo was a highly valued member of the ICES community for many years, actively participating in ICES stock assessment working groups (Working Group on the Assessment of Southern Shelf Stocks of Hake, Monk and Megrim, Working Group for the Bay of Biscay and the Iberian Waters Ecoregion, Arctic Fisheries Working Group), mainly dealing with demersal fish stocks. His insight, thoughtful contributions, and constructive engagement enriched the work of the groups in which he participated and helped strengthen the collaborative spirit that lies at the heart of ICES. Also, his professionalism, commitment and willingness to share his expertise earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues across the ICES network and beyond. Outside ICES, Ricardo also played an important role in the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization.

Beyond his professional achievements, Ricardo will be remembered as a valued colleague and dear friend. His kindness, generosity and joy left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of working alongside him. Ricardo's passing is a great loss to the ICES community.
