ICES Annual Science Conference 2023

Ecological carrying capacity of aquaculture

Which environmental indicators are important for advancing understanding of the carrying capacity of low trophic level species in aquaculture?

Monday 11 September
17:30–19:00
Room 0C
Bring your knowledge of ecology, oceanography, and/or environmental management practices in your area. Join the discussion on the application of ecological carrying capacity as an aquaculture management strategy!

In this networking session, we will be identifying environmental drivers and thresholds to create guidance for aquaculture monitoring techniques. Contributors will be invited to be co-authors of the resulting publication. Bring your laptop with you!

Given the current levels of understanding and experience in the implementation of ecological carrying capacity (ECC) monitoring, there is now a need to explore the possibility of developing guidelines for more cost-effective, less data-intensive ECC monitoring techniques.

It is important that these guidelines draw on expert knowledge to

  •  identify the environmental drivers relevant to the types of aquacultures being monitored and the waterbody in which they occur
  • provide guidance on the choice of proxy for ECC, and
  • guide the establishment of the ECC thresholds
In this information-sharing workshop, we will review ECC monitoring techniques with the potential to identify more efficient applications to support ECC as a management strategy.

The goal is to produce a paper based on the data collected prior to and during the network session. Session participants will be invited to contribute as authors to this paper.

Session format:

  • Two opening presentations:
    • a background statement on recent advances in ECC science, management, and current information gaps
    • an outline of the paper in preparation and how the work from this session will advance this paper towards publication
  • Participants will be asked to complete a short survey to collect information on environmental drivers
  • Round table discussions will identify the environmental drivers, proxies for ECC, and ECC thresholds across several ecoregions
  • Facilitated reporting back from round table discussions
  • Short closing summary of the next steps and an invitation for participants to contribute to paper development
