WKREF1WKREF1TrueMassimiliano Cardinale, Henning WinkerFRSGmassimiliano.cardinale@slu.se, henning.WINKER@ec.europa.euWorkshop on ICES reference points

Hybrid meeting online and at ICES Headquarters
2-4 November 2021
ICES refers to two types of reference points when providing fisheries advice for category 1 stocks: precautionary approach (PA) reference points and maximum sustainable yield (MSY) reference points. The PA reference points are used when assessing the state of stocks and their exploitation relative to the precautionary approach objectives. The MSY reference points used in the advice rule applied by ICES are aimed at producing advice consistent with the objective of achieving MSY.

Recent ICES workshops (WKREBUILD, WKGMSE3 and WKRPCHANGE) have discussed and made recommendations related to ICES reference points. The current procedures for estimating reference points are complex and difficult to communicate internally and externally.

A thorough review of ICES reference points is now needed and process for estimating, updating and communicating reference points needs to be re-evaluated in the context of the ICES advice rule and the recurrent advice that is currently been requested.

This workshop is now full.

Note: If the workshop is oversubscribed, ICES reserves the right, in consultation with the workshop chairs, to select the final workshop participants based on their expertise and geographical distribution.
