Marine surveys are expensive. Due to recent
budgetary, political, and pandemic-associated pressures, a number of
decisions on survey implementation have had to be made. These decisions have been taken at short notice and
with little opportunity to evaluate different options for effort reductions, the
effects of which will only become apparent in the next few years.
The previous
workshop WKUSER (2020) identified that such changes are a recurring theme within many
monitoring agencies and that more coherent planning and a long-term response
strategy is desirable.
It is in the interest of both the national governments, who are making the
decisions, and ICES, who is using this information for its advice, to better
understand the impact on stock assessment advice and to have a clearer
understanding of the mitigation measures that can be implemented to minimise the
impact of such events.
