Joint CIESM/ICES Workshop on Mnemiopsis Science

The Joint CIESM/ICES Workshop on Mnemiopsis Science (JWMS) will review and discuss the latest knowledge on the biogeography and ecology of the jellyfish Mnemiopsis leidyi and its predator Beroe spp.

The American comb jellyfish (Mnemiopsis leidyi) invaded the Black and Caspian seas in large numbers in the 1980s. Its presence and distribution led to major changes in the marine ecosystem and resulted in economic losses due to a decline in fish and shellfish stocks. It has since then spread to the Mediterranean Sea and has also been recorded in the Baltic and Southern North seas since 2005.

The JWMS will convene for the first time in September 2014 at ICES Annual Science Conference (ASC) in A Coruña, Spain. Scientists from both the ICES and CIESM areas will meet to r
eview and discuss the latest knowledge regarding the biogeography and ecology of Mnemiopsis leidyi and of its predator Beroe spp.
