Data Officer vacancy

​​​​​We are looking for a talented individual with competencies in data management and some knowledge in scripting languages or databases to join ICES Secretariat Data Centre based in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Data team comprises 15 staff members who provide marine data services to ICES member countries, science expert groups, European Commission, Regional Seas Conventions (HELCOM and OSPAR), the European Environment Agency (EEA), and various other projects and portals.

We are looking for a candidate to fill the role of Data Officer, working across the different data flows managed by ICES. These data are used for the assessment of the marine environment. This role involves close collaboration with national institute experts dealing with data collection and the assessment of these data. The role will require a flexible and service-minded approach, as the ability to manage internal and external relationships with data customers and data providers is both important and very dynamic. A vocational or educational background related to science, and/or statistics and/or software development is an essential aspect of this role as both thematic understanding and proven technical skills are required in this position. 

The following skills and competencies are critical for this role:

Key responsibilities:

  • Registering, loading, and documenting data in ICES data management system(s) for key dataflows such as impulsive noise, continuous noise, cetaceans, SmartDots
  • Proactively communicating with data providers and data users on all aspects of data processing, data products and data calls
  • Quality control of data and metadata, with specific support to the roll-out of the Data Profiling Tool to the experts
  • Content governance of the data flows, including code control through ICES code vocabulary and further development of the dataflow schematics
  • Close cooperation with the Data team towards the development of new and existing services
  • Active participation in project team meetings and project management
  • Other relevant data management activities

Required competencies:

  • University degree in science or equivalent vocational experience
  • Solid written and spoken English
  • A team player, but capable of working independently with little supervision
  • A high level of computer competence, knowledge of databases and related software tools
  • Project management experience
  • Proactive problem-solving and communication
  • Methodical approach, i.e. managing tasks, priorities and responsibilities

Terms of appointment

The appointment will be full-time​ (38 hours per week), starting in August 2023 or as soon as possible, for a four-year contract period with the possibility of an extension.

ICES Secretariat staff enjoy privileges and immunities pursuant to the Host Agreement between the Government of Denmark and ICES. The salary for this role is situated at the “C5” grade which is exempt from Danish income tax and is based on, but not identical to, the United Nations common salary system.  A tax-free pension scheme is available.
