Vacancy at ICES: Application developer/programmer

We seek an application developer/programmer to join our Data and Information team in Copenhagen.

​​​​​ICES seeks a programmer to join its Data and Information team in Copenhagen. The successful candidate will possess a mix of technical skills related to programming languages, but also to databases, project work and the application development cycle. A good technical knowledge in Microsoft Visual Studio, client side languages and some relevant work experience will be required.

ICES is an international organization that coordinates and promotes marine research in the North Atlantic. The ICES Data Centre maintains some of the world's largest databases on marine fisheries, oceanography, and the marine environment, and is part of a global network of distributed data centres. One of ICES core activities is to give the European Commission scientific advice on fish catches, which is underpinned by web and database systems. The web system, which will be the core activity for the successful applicant, is a fisheries system where European countries upload, manipulate and report on fisheries landing and biological sampling data. The outputs from this are ultimately used for scientific advice to the European Commission. ​

The Person       

We are looking for a person who has good technical knowledge of mainly ASP.NET, C# and SQL, and a willingness to develop functionalities based on specifications, and locate and correct errors in existing code. It is expected that the applicant has a good knowledge of the optimal technical solutions for the different specified web functionalities. Although we are a small team of developers, which will support you when needed, it is expected that you will work independently, and contribute to the development process and produce results as a member of the Data and Information team. The applicant should possess excellent skills in both oral and written communication in English, as this is the working language of the organisation.

Core Activities

  • Transforming and developing specifications into web and application functionalities
  • Problem solving, debugging and error corrections of both new and existing code
  • Contribute with technical solution suggestions 

Qualifications and experience

  • It is expected that the applicant has a few years of experience in programming in ASP.NET and C# against a database
  • Very good knowledge of query languages SQL and preferably LINQ
  • Good front-end skills (JavaScript, HTML and CSS etc.)

Terms of appointment

The post is full time (38 hours) and the appointment is for an initial term of 17 months.  The salary is dependent on experience and is based on, but not identical to, that of UN's C7 grade and exempt from Danish income tax. An employee contribution pension scheme is available.

Starting Date: As soon as possible.
