The Professional Officer will assist with the strengthening of the technical and scientific input to ICES work, overseeing the Transparent Assessment Framework (TAF), and coordinating the development of new products and deliverables.
Candidates should possess strong analytical skills related to quantitative fish stocks assessment methods and fisheries management strategies evaluations, as well as an understanding of underlying data needs and the integration of ecosystem and environmental drivers. Candidates should have excellent coding and code repository management skills, as well as a good understanding of process and documentation requirements for the establishment of a quality assurance system.
This will support the implementation of the ICES Strategic Plan and Advisory Plan and foster the efficient use of resources and quality assurance.
Main responsibilities
- Oversee the further development of the Transparent Assessment Framework (TAF)
- Coordinate with the scientific community leads that are key stakeholders to the TAF
- Direct the implementation of quality assurance aspects of scripted and coded methods used in ICES advice
- Support ICES fisheries management advice
- Assist with the evaluation of fish stock assessment methods and management strategies across the areas of Advice, Data, and Science in the ICES Secretariat
Qualifications and experience
The position will be filled by a scientist with extensive work experience in quantitative fish stock assessment, a strong fisheries background, or related environmental sciences, as well as possessing the following:
- A PhD degree from a recognized university in a marine related science discipline (or mathematics/statistics/similar qualifications),
- At least five years' professional experience, from relevant research and/or an international organization relevant to the marine science and stock assessment,
- Extensive experience in build-up of quality assurance processes including coding and documentation of data inputs and outputs,
- Solid experience in scientific analysis of fisheries data,
- Evidence of excellent computer literacy and programming skills,
- Ability to work in a team and with people from diverse national and cultural backgrounds
Terms of appointment
The appointment will be full-time (38 hours per week, inclusive lunch breaks) for 2 years and an additional 2 years based on a mid-term project overseen by ICES Bureau.
The start date is expected to be no later than 6 January 2020.
ICES Secretariat staff enjoy privileges and immunities pursuant to the Host Agreement between the Government of Denmark and ICES. The salaries of ICES staff are exempt from Danish income tax and are based on, but not identical to, UN salary grade scales. The salary will be at the “P2" grade. Benefits similar to those paid by the UN organization are also available for eligible staff members (e.g. installation/repatriation, dependents' education, and home leave allowances).
