Data Officer vacancy

We are seeking a talented data manager to join the ICES Secretariat Data Centre based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Data team comprises 15 staff members who provide marine data services to ICES member countries, science expert groups, European Commission, Regional Seas Conventions (HELCOM and OSPAR), the European Environment Agency (EEA), and various other projects and portals.

We seek a candidate to fill the role of Data Officer working primarily with data flows (acoustic trawl surveys, DATRAS, RDB-FishFrame), for the assessment of the population status of fish stocks, as well as indicators related to the ecosystem approach to fisheries. This role involves close collaboration with national institute experts dealing with data collection and the assessment of these data for both fisheries dependent and fisheries independent data. 

Due to the important and dynamic aspect of managing internal and external relations with data customers, this role will require a flexible and service-minded approach. A vocational or educational background related to fisheries or marine management, and/or statistics and/or biology are an essential aspect of this role as a thematic understanding is as important as technical skills in this position.

Key responsibi​lites

  • ​Registering, loading and documenting data in the ICES data management system(s)
  • Proactively communicating with data providers and data users on all aspects of data processing and data products
  • Actively participating in different project teams
  • Quality controling data and meta-data, both through existing software and tools, but also by helping develop new tools and routines in the programming and database environment used at ICES
  • Contributing to reports, expert group meetings and presentations as required
  • Content governance of the data flows, including code control through the ICES code vocabulary
  • Other relevant data management activities
Required competences

  • University degree in a marine, biology or statistics related subject, or equivalent vocational experience
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • A team player, but capable of working independently with little supervision
  • A high level of computer competence, knowledge of databases and related software tools
  • Proactive problem solving and communication
  • Methodical approach, i.e. managing tasks, priorities and responsibilities

Terms of appointment

The appointment will be full-time, for a four-year contract period starting in early 2019.

ICES Secretariat staff enjoy privileges and immunities pursuant to the Host Agreement between the Government of Denmark and ICES. The salary for this role is situated at the “C6" grade which is exempt from Danish income tax and is based on, but not identical to, the United Nations common salary system.  A tax-free pension scheme is available.

The ICES Staff Rules set out the conditions and principles of employment and the responsibilities of the staff of the ICES Secretariat.
