ICES is an intergovernmental organization that develops science, advice, and related data products to support the sustainable use of the oceans.
The Advisory Committee (ACOM) oversees the process to provide scientific advice to competent authorities in support of the sustainable management of marine resources and ecosystems throughout the North Atlantic Ocean. ACOM covers fisheries management advice in relation to more than 250 stocks as well as integrated ecosystem-based advice.
ACOM is led by the Chair and three Vice-Chairs and consists of 20 national representatives. ACOM also coordinates the work of its related expert working groups which currently number around 100.
In the role of Chair, you will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of timely, quality-assured and science-based advice. This will require a great deal of daily organisational work with the Secretariat, specifically the Head of Advisory Support, and the ACOM Vice-Chairs, to ensure that requests from clients can be met in terms of contents, approach and timing. You will also work in close cooperation and coordination with the Chair of the Science Committee (SCICOM) and the Head of Data and Information in order to further integrate science, data and advice to adapt to an evolving international marine governance context. You will work actively on strengthening our integrated ecosystem advice and the development and implementation of the upcoming ICES Strategic Plan (2019–2023).
You will lead and steer the work of ACOM. As Chair, you will represent the advisory function in ICES leadership, which includes reporting on advisory activities quarterly to Bureau (the executive board) and annually to Council (the governing board, comprising representatives from all ICES Member Countries).
Your responsibilities also include liaising with clients and stakeholders and representing ICES in the presentation of advice. This work requires comprehensive preparation and can include a considerable amount of travel. It will be important for you to maintain and develop relationships with the current ICES stakeholders in addition to keeping an eye out for new opportunities for cooperation and innovative ways of delivering advice.
