Expert Group Reports

There are currently almost 150 expert groups in ICES network. The groups meet regularly, and the resulting reports are available in the online library.

ICES expert groups, study groups, and workshops address many diverse issues of the marine ecosystem. Groups are composed of nationally nominated experts and may also include additional expertise to ensure the highest quality, peer-reviewed science. Expert groups are assigned Terms of Reference (ToRs) for their work by their parent committee – the Science Committee (SCICOM) or Advisory Committee (ACOM).

Expert group members work throughout the year and normally meet annually or bi-annually to address their ToRs and write their report. Their reports are working documents and are therefore not peer-reviewed.

In addition to the report, group participants may judge that developments in their field warrant further attention. They may then apply to produce an ICES publication such as a Cooperative Research Report (CRR) or a Techniques in Marine Environmental Sciences (TIMES).
