Vacancy for a Professional Officer

We are seeking applications for the role of Professional Officer in the Science Support team at our Secretariat in Copenhagen.

​The responsibilities of the Professional Officer will span across departments (science, advice and data) with a primary objective to strengthen the profile and co-ordination of work conducted by ICES expert groups and to further develop ICES capacity for scientific advice. As Professional Officer, you will play a valuable role in facilitating and highlighting ICES science and enabling a stronger integration of scientific developments and ecosystem considerations in our advice.

You will join a dynamic and collaborative international team in Copenhagen, who is committed to providing a welcoming, efficient and rewarding working environment, serving the ICES network, and advancing the scope and impact of marine science.

Main responsibilities

  • strengthen co-ordination of work conducted by ICES expert groups, under the Steering Groups, which cover topics that include ecosystem observation, human activities, pressures and impacts, integrated ecosystem assessments, aquaculture, fish and fisheries ecology and assessment, and ecosystem processes and dynamics  
  • support integration of scientific development and strengthening of the portfolio of data products available to the expert network in the fisheries related advice
  • contribute to the development of ecosystem overviews (ecosystem descriptions that are now evolving to address social and economic considerations) and contribute to strengthening their rigour, online accessibility and visibility
  • assist with the production of advice on ecosystem and environment related issues and support the development of integrated advice in respect of the Common Fisheries Policy and marine environmental policies, related to e.g., Marine Protected Areas, biodiversity, Good Environmental Status, and Ecosystem Based Management
  • support the Science Committee and Head of Science Support with ICES co-sponsored symposia
  • support the ICES expert network by contributing to projects on marine science and policy, and ensuring that project deliverables are linked to ICES priorities and feed into the work of expert groups

Qualifications and experience

We seek a Professional Officer who is motivated, organised, collaborative and flexible.  Further requirements for this position are:

  • a higher university degree, preferably a PhD, in marine science or a closely related discipline
  • professional experience in a marine science institute and/or an international organization, including a record of leading, publishing and presenting marine science and/or advice as well as managing projects
  • knowledge of ocean governance, especially policies related to ecosystems, fisheries and the marine environment is an advantage
  • exceptional writing and presentation skills, computer literacy and attention to detail
  • background in interdisciplinary science, working effectively with multidisciplinary teams comprised of people from diverse national and cultural backgrounds is an advantage
  • ability to travel internationally several times per year

Terms of appointment

The appointment will be full-time (38 hours per week, inclusive lunch breaks), for a four-year contract period starting preferably in January 2019, or as soon as possible.  The salary will be at the “P2" grade, which is based on the United Nations common salary system. 

ICES Secretariat staff enjoy privileges and immunities pursuant to the Host Agreement between the Government of Denmark and ICES. The salaries of ICES staff are exempt from Danish income tax and are based on, but not identical to, UN salary grade scales.  Benefits similar to those paid by the UN organization are also available for eligible staff members (e.g. installation/repatriation, dependents' education, and home leave allowances). Furthermore, a tax-free pension scheme is available, to which both the employee and ICES contribute.  The ICES Staff Rules set out the conditions and principles of employment and the responsibilities of the staff of the Secretariat.
