Krzysztof was an ichthyologist by education and earned his academic credentials in Antarctic fish research. In 1992 he founded and became the manager of the Marine Station in Hel, Poland, as part of the Institute of Oceanography at Gdansk University. Marine science and the marine environment were his passion. He received numerous awards, including the Swedish Baltic Sea Award, an award for significant contribution to the protection of Baltic Sea waters, and the 'Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski' Medal for outstanding contribution to the town of Gdynia. The Hel Marine Station runs a very rich set of research and educational activities, targetting students from all types of schools as well as the public at large.
Krzysztof was not only a dedicated scientist but also an innovative brain, which is reflected in the conception and goal of the Hel Marine Station and its outreach activities. Numerous students and scientists early in their career have received inspirational guidance there. Krzysztof was always full of ideas and energy. His plans to make the Hel Marine Station an integral part of the new project ‟Blue village" will make him live on in the hearts of visitors to Hel.
Professor Krzysztof Skóra was of member of the ICES expert groups on the ecology of marine mammals (WGMME) and on bycatch (WGBYC). ICES has lost a friend.
