ICES ANNUAL SCIENCE CONFERENCE 2016

Open session: How is your science being used in assessment and advice?

15:00-16:30
Wednesday, 21 September,
Room: Alfa
Chairs:  Eskild Kirkegaard (Denmark) Jörn Schmidt (Germany)

Have you ever asked yourself what a benchmark process is and how you might be connected?

This open session will discuss how science is used in assessments and advice. The discussion will be driven by the following questions:

How can we:

  • make best use of the expertise available in the ICES Expert Groups?
  • ensure that advice is based on best available science?
  • ensure that we focus on the issues of most importance?
  • ensure that we can address the advice requests of tomorrow?
  • improve the links between ICES Expert Groups and the Benchmark processes?

If you think these questions are interesting and relevant, and you have an opinion, please join us at this session. We are seeking an open discussion on the need for enhancing the links between experts as well as between Expert Groups, how this may best be done and how it can be used for assessments and advice.

To start this discussion, we will set up a discussion thread on the ICES SIHD LinkedIn group.

The ICES Advisory Committee (ACOM) discussed the link between benchmark processes and Expert Groups at their December 2015 meeting and concluded that assessment Expert Groups are spending considerable effort on conducting update assessments and that this effort would be better used if their focus was on improving the assessments. It was considered important that Expert Groups were given the ownership of the benchmark process.  It was agreed to establish a Joint Benchmark Steering Group and ACOM Sub-Group to improve the links between Expert Groups and Benchmarks. The group will present their ideas and suggestions at this session. Invited opponents will challenge these as an introduction to a general discussion.
