LME:LEARN courses

ICES organizes training courses in Ocean Governance together with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) and UNDP Cap-Net.

The three courses offer a blended learning approach to Ocean Governance:

  • For the West African region: 5-6 September 2018 in Dakar, Senegal
  • For the Latin America and Caribbean region: 3-4 October 2018  in Panama
  • For the Asian region: 23-24 January 2019 in China

The course follows the 'Governance -101' online module

By the end of the course participants will understand and become familiar with

  • key principles of good governance;
  • the importance the role of values and ethics in supporting good governance;
  • the role and process of stakeholder engagement;
  • approaches to sustainable finance;
  • international legal and institutional frameworks relevant to ocean governance on a global and/or regional scale;
  • the role of national and international agencies in implementing these global and regional instruments;
  • key elements of effective governance;
  • the importance of and tools for effective communication as a component of effective governance;
  • ways to integrate science into LME governance and assess science needs;
  • ways to assess governance measures 

About the project

The Strengthening Global Governance of Large Marine Ecosystems and Their Coasts through Enhanced Sharing and Application of LME/ICM/MPA/MSP Knowledge and Information Tools, or GEF LME:LEARN project, seeks to improve global ecosystem-based governance of Large Marine Ecosystems and their coasts by generating knowledge, building capacity, harnessing public and private partners and supporting south-to-south learning and north-to-south learning. This project is funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and executed by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO).
